Salting - Eksjö - Sweden

The Eksjo district is comprised of three operational areas: Eksjo, Vetlanda and Vimmerby. The three areas were earlier planned separately. This study aimed to investigate how much planning for preventive and acute snow and ice control could be improved through the use of WinterPlan, and to view the district as one large unit. The Eksjo district encompasses 2680 km of common road, of which 770 km are salt routes. Planning was done for preventive and acute salting.

Preventive salting
Before planning with WinterPlan, 10 vehicles were used for preventive salting, out of which 3 were spreading salt solution and 7 were spreading pre-wetted salt. The longest service time was 3 hours and 49 minutes. The shortest service time was 2 hours and 11 minutes. Average transport segments were 34 % of the total route.
In the new plans produced in WinterPlan, the vehicles were assumed to originate from the same road stations. The routes were dimensioned for a maximum of 4 hours service time. When planned in WinterPlan, the whole salt road network was covered by 7 vehicles. The longest service time was 4 hours and 9 minutes. The shortest service time was 3 hours and 19 minutes. Average transport segments were reduced to 30 % of the total route.

Acute salting
Before planning with WinterPlan, 18 vehicles were used for acute salting, out of which 3 were spreading salt solution and 15 were spreading pre-wetted salt. The longest service time was 3 hours and 11 minutes. The shortest service time was 1 hour and 3 minutes. Average transport segments were 43 % of the total route.
In the new plans produced in WinterPlan, the vehicles were assumed to originate from the same road stations or from the contractor in question. The routes were dimensioned for 2 to 3 hours service time, depending on road class. When planned in WinterPlan, the whole salt road network was covered by 13 vehicles. The longest service time was 3 hours and 11 minutes. The shortest service time was 1 hour and 22 minutes. Average transport segments were reduced to 36 % of the total route.
